PLAN AHEAD PART ONE: THE KITCHEN

Many people fail at long term weight loss because they do not plan ahead.  If you have easy access to healthy, low sugar, low in saturated fat foods, then you are more likely to choose those foods when the hunger pangs hit.  Try eating the healthy choices first before grabbing "cheat" foods.  You're more likely to feel full and eat less of the "cheat" foods or you may forgoe them all together.  Here are some tips for planning ahead in your kitchen.

Start by re-arranging your kitchen. Locate foods that might be considered "cheat" foods. This includes cookies, greasy chips, crackers containing saturated and transfats. Also in this list is candy, cake and brownies. Put all of these foods in a cabinet that is hard to get to.

Fill up your spice rack. Eating to lose weight does not mean that your food should be bland and boring. It's important to stay away from salty or high sodium foods. Foods high in salt will cause you to retain water and need to be avoided if you have high blood pressure.
Be sure to always have fruits and vegetables that are fast and easy to get to. If this means buying pre-cut and pre-washed friuts and vegetables, then do so.
Pre-cut pre-washed fruits and vegetables can be expensive depending on where you live. Frozen fruits and vegetables are a great choice. Make sure you are buying ones that are not surrounded by butter or high fat sauces.
Have a variety of small plates and saucers. Custard cups are convienent when having a portion described as a 1/2 cup. This variety of plates and cups will help you with portion control.
Invest in a mini indoor grill. They are not very expensive and provide a quick and easy way to prepare chicken, meat, fish and frozen vegetable burgers. Excess grease runs off into a pan at the bottom.

If you have a family, you may have to keep some things in your kitchen that are OK for them to eat but only for you on special occasions. Try your best to ignore these items and learn to enjoy what's good for you.
